In a town which has well over a hundred historic homes on tour, to be one of the very most popular is only one of the many ways that makes Mount Repose so special.
This area along the river was first explored by Europeans in the 16th century, was soon known as The Natchez District, and became a territory of the United States in the late 18th century. We became the State of Mississippi in 1817.
Built in 1824, Mount Repose has been lived in by descendants of the builders for nearly two hundred years. Two centuries of thoughtful charming additions to the original Federal two story double galleried center hall plantation home, with several fascinating dependencies . . . some original, like the hexagonal dairy building, and others, like the nearby brick guest or caretakers house, and the original brick kitchen building, now connected to the original structure with a fireplaced den lined with books and filled with cozy slip-covered furnishings, and a formal dining room.
With two bed-room suites on the second floor; several guest rooms, a library, and sitting rooms, it is home to be lived in with great comfort and enviable style.
Architecturally the house is an open canvas where one can see the original exquisite Federal style wooden mantels moved to the additions as newer more modern and stylish black marble Greek Revival replaced them in the main rooms of the home, along with some Greek Revival detailing. The additions are mostly 19th century and skillfully and thoughtfully done. The entire property was improved in 1994 with new heating and cooling systems, electric and plumbing, and kitchen and baths.
The grounds are covered with a beautifully landscaped network of connecting drives, with fabulous ancient live oaks and regional plantings. The cozy rear gallery with comfortable wicker furnishings overlooks an enormous pasture all the way to the stocked and scenic pond.
